Let's Talk Streets

The 2023 American Planning Association Wisconsin annual conference presented the City of Madison with an award for its Complete Green Streets plan. EQT By Design’s engagement and analysis were instrumental in pulling this plan together by incorporating insights from deep community engagement and integrating community-oriented equity into the Complete Green Streets plan.

The results were in a new process centered on underserved communities' needs/voices and street design centering on pedestrians and public transportation.  Most notably, this is highlighted in the adoption of Equity Priority Areas (EPAs), an equity Sphere of Impact, and a decision-making process for new street projects that works to systemize community needs in the process.

Divided into Listening and Reflection, here we targeted the Darbo neighborhood, Madison community stakeholders, and JustDane populations.

Listening: 71 people total, including five youths, during a dedicated youth session

Reflection: 25 people in total, split between Darbo & JustDane, Madison Network of Black Professionals Exec team, Latino Professional Association Exec Team

Through these surveys and focus groups, an innovative process of community engagement, transportation department public communications, and intra-city department communications was developed.

The city council adopted the Complete Green Streets plan in early 2023; the first project that will be developed under this new initiative will start this year on South Park Street.
